Message from the Headmaster

“HCF.” That’s how people at Cushing referred to their community in the early 1900s, by which they meant “Happy Cushing Family.” That tradition of caring continues to set our school apart. Don’t just take my word for it. See how our students describe their Cushing experience!

Christine says, “the Cushing community is one in which every individual feels welcome. It’s not just a school; it’s a family.” Sweta agrees: “The Cushing community is the best in every sense. Every person you see has a smile and everyone is really friendly. The teachers are more like friends who know you personally and can teach you the best in and out of class. The Cushing community is like a second family. It’s the greatest.” Even if you join us as a transfer student, you will find yourself welcomed warmly by everyone you meet. Kathryn found that, “as a new entering junior, Cushing was such an amazing community to jump into. I love it. Everyone knows everyone and it’s a nice big family – my home away from home.”

At Cushing, teachers will know your name, celebrate you as an individual and care about you as a person. Julia says that “the relationships formed between the students and teachers are great. We are all friends and family.” Brittany has found that “the Cushing community is so welcoming. I feel I can go to any teacher with my concerns. I feel as though everyone is watching out for me. I am extremely grateful for the community.” Christine notes that “the faculty really cares about the well-being of the students. They want them to strive to be the best they can be.”

You will also meet and make friends with students from across America and from more than two dozen countries. Ian feels that “the best thing about Cushing is the extraordinarily diverse student body.” Xuran remembers that “leaving home as a 14-year-old and flying across oceans to study in an entirely different culture was difficult. But I found everything I need at Cushing: friendship, support, and challenge.”

Cushing offers its students a vast array of opportunities and encouragement. Whether you seek the top athletic programs, world-class art facilities, academic support, ESL, or superb academic preparation for the best universities, Cushing meets you where you are and provides the inspiration, confidence and resources for you to flourish. All of this you will find in our safe and friendly community, set in a picturesque New England village, within easy reach of Boston’s vast cultural and educational riches.

Perhaps Meghan says it best of all: “Our community is so unified and caring that it makes me want to come to school.”

If this is the secondary school experience you seek, I encourage you to call or visit Cushing. And, please, when you visit, be sure to stop by my office to say hello. My door is always open to students and families.

“What I like best about boarding schools is the opportunity to get to know students more fully than is often possible at a day school. What has drawn me to Cushing in particular is its strong, nurturing community. Cushing is a school with a heart.”
