Visual Arts
Cushing is home to one of the most highly respected visual arts programs in secondary education. We feature courses ranging from beginning to advanced levels in a variety of media, such as silversmithing, architectural design, photography and stained glass.
Students in the Visual Arts Program at Cushing encounter many avenues for self-expression. Our supportive environment allows young artists to grow, learn from each other, our faculty and guest artists, and to value their talent and creative spirit. Whether you are a beginner starting with the fundamentals or an advanced portfolio student, you are sure to be impressed with our selection of courses and distinguished instructors.
Housed in the Emily Fisher Landau Center for Visual Arts, our state-of-the-art facilities and equipment is comparable to that at some colleges, and the envy of any professional studio artist. Highlights include:

Pottery & Sculpture Studio houses nine Brent wheels, equipment for firing and an electric kiln

Photography Studio includes 12 enlargers and large film dryer; professional digital color photo lab features Epson large format printer, and Epson 4000 printer and multi CD/DVD burner

Art Studio boasts 40x80-foot studio for painting and drawing

Silversmithing Studio is a complete working studio for fabricating jewelry, flatware and hollowware; an impressive collection of historic metalsmithing tools (some from the 1880s) allows for even greater capabilities

Glass Studio allows students to explore this ancient art through contemporary methods. Topics include cutting glass, working with lead cane, soldering, using copper foil, painting on glass, and molded glass jewelry.
To try any of our art courses, students need only the desire to learn and do their best. With this philosophy in mind, we believe all of our students will be successful. Many Cushing graduates have gone on to prestigious art schools and are enjoying professional careers in the arts.
