Giving Back to Cushing

Cushing helped shape the person you are today. Just as donors helped make your time at Cushing rewarding and fulfilling, so too are you called upon to ensure this legacy for students today and tomorrow.

Your gift will keep Cushing in top competitive shape, ensuring that we can attract a diverse, talented student body, retain top-notch faculty and provide the range of sports, arts and extracurricular offerings that make for the best possible student experience.

How is my gift to Cushing used?

Gifts to Cushing by alumni support every facet of the Academy.

Unrestricted gifts to our annual fund, the Cushing Academy Fund, offset annual operating expenses, including all aspects of a Cushing education, from faculty salaries and technology to scholarships and student activities.

Gifts to the Endowment provide permanent, ongoing support for the Academy. Your gift is invested with Cushing's other endowment funds, to provide annual income to Cushing for a purpose that you designate, such as faculty salaries, scholarships or for the Academy's general educational purposes. This is truly a gift that keeps on giving!

Gifts for Capital Projects at Cushing support specific current needs pertaining to our buildings and grounds and infrastructure, such as technology. Launched in October 2006 is a new Faculty Housing Initiative, for which we are seeking to raise $400,000 this fiscal year for capital improvements to faculty apartments in the dormitories.

Restricted gifts support a specific project or purpose that you designate.

Endowment
Throughout Cushing's history, generous alumni and parents have made permanent gifts to the Academy that provide ongoing support. These gifts are invested by the Academy to provide annual income for purposes designated by the donor or for the Academy's general educational purposes. Many individuals and families have made contributions to endow a scholarship in recognition of the assistance they received as students. Others have endowed gifts to support faculty salaries and faculty development, in honor of faculty who made a difference to them. Still others have made unrestricted gifts to the endowment, which provide annual support to Cushing each year for the Academy's general needs. Gifts to the endowment may be made outright in a single gift or paid over a number of years. Gifts that provide income to you for life, such as a charitable gift annuity or trust, can be an excellent way to make a larger endowment gift than you thought possible.

What about gifts of stocks?

Transferring stock to Cushing is easy, and gifts of appreciated securities, including stocks, bonds and mutual funds, may be a particularly attractive way to support Cushing.

A gift of appreciated, long-term marketable securities (owned for more than one year) will generally provide an income tax deduction for the full fair market value of the securities, while avoiding the capital gains tax that would otherwise be due on a sale.

Securities may be transferred through your broker or by delivery of the securities to Cushing Academy. If the securities are Depository Trust Company (DTC) eligible, they may be transferred electronically to Cushing, through PRIMEVEST Financial. Securities should be routed as follows: DTC# 0701, for the account of Cushing Academy, account number 23035878. Please notify us that securities are being transferred electronically so that we may confirm that they have reached our account. Please also have a notation made on the transaction referencing the name of the donor. Cushing's Tax ID# is 042-104-048.

To transfer shares of mutual funds or if you wish to establish an account for Cushing Academy with your broker, please call for additional information. Shares of closely-held stock may also be given to Cushing. Please contact the Office of Development for details at (978) 827-7400 or by email at alumniprograms@cushing.org.
