For the last 20 years Cushing has been part
of the Central New England Class "A" Prep School
Baseball League (CNEPSBL), consisting of schools such as Phillips
Andover Academy, Deerfield Academy and Northfield-Mt. Hermon
School. In addition to twelve league games, Cushing rounds
out its 20 game schedule with non-league contests against
the likes of The Choate-Rosemary Hall School, Tabor Academy,
New Hampton School, Naval Academy Prep and others.
Cushing has qualified for the Central New England
Championship tournament 16 times since the league inception.
The Penguins captured the title in 1983, 1987, 1991, 1992
and 2000. During this time many of the Cushing players have
received individual recognition, with some earning baseball
scholarships from NCAA Division I and II colleges. The CNEPSBL
has also produced several Major League Baseball players, including
Mike Trombley of the Orioles, Mark Johnson of the Mets, Roberto
Hernandez of the Royals and Cushing's own Sean DePaula '93
currently pitching for the Cleveland Indians organization.
Many of Cushing's varsity baseball players
participate in varsity athletics during the winter season;
therefore, Penguin baseball does not officially begin the
season until the beginning of March. However, pitchers and
catchers do meet informally to throw in the Heslin Gymnasium
prior to the varsity team's seven day indoor tryout period.
Those fifteen players who earn varsity positions report for
a week of pre-season practice at the end of March. During the past few years the team has traveled to Arizona where it
has conducted standard practices as well as scrimmage games
against other high school teams from all over the country.
