Announcing Cushing's 12th Head of School
Dear Cushing Alumni, Parents and Friends,
On behalf of the Board of Trustees and our Head of School Search Committee, I am delighted to announce the Board's unanimous appointment of Christopher Torino as the twelfth Head of Cushing Academy, effective July 1, 2013, following the enthusiastic recommendation of the Search Committee.
As Dean of Faculty at The Taft School in Watertown, CT since 2006, Chris has been responsible for all matters relating to 125 faculty members, and he works closely with every facet of the Taft School’s leadership as a member of the Senior Administrative Team. Chris is passionate about the academic, residential, and athletic and arts components that define a Cushing education. As a veteran English teacher, varsity baseball coach, and dorm parent with his wife Dena, Chris shares and embraces our long-held value that Cushing exists for students, their academic growth and their personal development.
In accepting the appointment, Chris wrote: "I am deeply honored to serve Cushing Academy as its 12th Head of School—to lead a school which possesses an undeniable combination—a dynamic balance—of the historic rootedness and transcendent striving special to great schools. As an educator I have immersed myself in the paradoxically simple and nuanced endeavor of creating deep and meaningful relationships with students and faculty—relationships from which great learning and action can spring. And with great humility and drive, I look forward to engaging such relationships with the full community. Cushing’s core values, its proud history, and its communal purpose and conduct are clear and strong; and its understanding of its future potential provides the entire community and me with exhilarating opportunities."
The Board is confident that Cushing will continue to thrive and reach new heights under Chris' headship and his stewardship of Thomas Parkman Cushing's commitment to "strengthening and enlarging the minds of the rising and future generations." The collegial leadership and dedication to students which were praised by Chris' colleagues were apparent to us all throughout the extensive application, interview and campus visit process.
Prior to joining the Taft faculty, Chris also taught, coached and was a dorm head at Gould Academy in Bethel, ME and was the founding English Department Chair at Sage Hill School in Newport Coast, CA. He is a graduate of Amherst College, where he received his B.A. in English, and of the University of Louisville, where he was awarded his M.A. in English.
Chris and Dena are proud parents of two children. The Torinos look forward to making their home at Cushing and to joining the wider community.
The selection of the Head of School is one of the greatest responsibilities of trusteeship, and our thanks go to Search Committee Chair Jeremy Duffy ’89 and committee members Liz Akers, Mark Casady, Seamus Collins, Jessica Devin, Wayne Hancock, Catherine Pollock and Robert Young '69 for their outstanding efforts throughout this intensive search. We also thank everyone in our community who shared their thoughts with the committee and with our search consultants Deirdre Ling and Jim Bonney, and to all who met with the candidates on campus, providing feedback along the way. We can all be proud that Chris has accepted the appointment.
As Dr. Jim Tracy prepares to complete his own service to Cushing on June 30, we again express our gratitude for his leadership over the last seven years. His vision and numerous contributions leave Cushing stronger than ever, and we thank Jim and Jan for their wonderful dedication to our community.
Please join me in warmly welcoming Chris and his family to Cushing. The Board and I look forward to our partnership with Chris and with our faculty and staff, students, parents and alumni as we begin together the next chapter in Cushing Academy’s proud history.
