April 13, 2012: Eight is NEVER Enough! Improvisation Group
Eight is NEVER Enough! will visit Cushing to present the annual Katie Lemmon '09 Performance. Currently in its 8th season, Eight is NEVER Enough! is the product of talent and vision. The troupe consists of NYC performers and artists that are dedicated to captivating audiences through old-school comedy entertainment. The energetic cast comes from a variety of backgrounds including the dramatic stage, film, TV, stand-up, opera, classical, and musical theatre. Dueling Robots
11/30/2011
Congratulations to our winning robotics team, VexRobotics, on being named champion of the recent mini classroom competition! The student-designed robots were awarded points for pushing tennis balls to the opponent’s side of the arena and extra points for getting them in the bucket. The victor was determined after three, two-minute matches. The winners will receive Penguin Points for use in the cafe.


Cushing Scholars @ Luna Negra Dance Theater

On Tuesday, the Cushing Scholars were treated to an evening of modern and classical Latino dance from Luna Negra Dance Theater at the historic Capital Center for the Arts in Concord, New Hampshire. Grammy-award winning string musicians, Turtle Island Quartet, accompanied the Chicago-based dancers on stage.

CA Group Attends London's Churchill Conference

John Kelly '13, Grady MacPhee '13 and Nick Merrill '13 recently traveled to London with faculty member Alec Coyle, Chairman of the History and Social Sciences Department, to attend the 28th International Churchill Conference, which examines the leadership and legacy of Sir Winston Churchill.

Ray Bourque Receives Academy's Hero Award

On Monday, October 31, Cushing Academy welcomed Ray Bourque, parent of two Cushing alumni and a member of the NHL Hall of Fame, to an all-school assembly Leadership Discussion. During this event, Mr. Bourque was presented with the Academy's 2011 Hero Award, highlighting his extensive charitable work and his service to Cushing Academy.

Visit with Matthew Polly, Author of American Shaolin

Members of the Cushing community enjoyed a wonderful visit with Matthew Polly, author of American Shaolin, which was one of our six summer reading book choices. In addition to chronicling his journey to China to master kungfu, Mr. Polly impressed upon students the importance of taking chances and setting goals. “In fact, sometimes when you jump off the diving board,” he said, “you have no way back but forward.”

Author Rob Gifford Shares his China Road Experiences

On September 30, Cushing welcomed Rob Gifford, the author of one of our summer reading selections, China Road. Mr. Gifford shared with the Cushing community several experiences during his six-week journey on National Highway 312, China’s 3000 mile “mother road” that stretches from Shanghai to the Gobi Desert, as well as his take on the big question the world is asking: Will China be the next global superpower?

Supporting and Honoring Veterans

In a recent all-school assembly, Cushing welcomed guests representing two extraordinary organizations whose mission is to support and better the lives of United States military personnel and their families: the Fisher House Foundation and Canines for Combat Veterans, a program of NEADS, the National Education for Assistance Dogs Services. In addition, we were most privileged to welcome two veterans who have served this country with enormous dedication and at great sacrifice.

Nancy Boyle Named Teacher of the Future

Cushing is pleased to announce that faculty member Nancy Boyle was selected by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) as part of the 2011-2012 Teachers of the Future Program. The NAIS Teachers of the Future were selected from a large pool of nominees who inspire academic excellence in students and who serve as opinion leaders among their colleagues and peers.

"The Challenge of Leadership for Our Times"
What does it mean to be a leader? Are leaders born or made? Can flaws be a strength? These were just a handful of questions posed during the 2010 Fall University of Oxford – Cushing Academy Discussion: The Challenge of Leadership for our Times.
 
Moderated by Headmaster Tracy, the panel included Tracey Camilleri, Associate Fellow at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford; Margot Morrell, lead author of Shackleton's Way: Leadership Lessons from the Great Antarctic Explorer; and Phil Reed, Director of the Churchill War Rooms, London (who joined via video conference). Panelists shared perspectives on global health in a Spring 2010 panel discussion, culminating the Cushing community’s study of the 2009 summer reading selection: Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World, by author Tracy Kidder. FALL 2009
“21st Century Challenges and Opportunities: Our Aging Global Population”
George Leeson, Deputy Director, Oxford Institute on Ageing, James Martin 21st Century School, University of Oxford and Aubrey de Grey, Chief Science Officer, SENS participated in the Fall 2009 panel in our Oxford-Cushing Discussion Series. The interactive discussion addressed the topic of extending the human lifespan – to as much as 150 years. When could we see a world like this? What is its impact on our creativity and productive contributions? Evolution and world population? Both students and faculty posed questions to de Grey, who joined the discussion via video conference in Geneva, and Leeson, who spent a week as a Scholar in Residence at the Academy.
