Athletic Electives -
strengthening your body to support your mind
Instructional Athletics
Our athletic electives are designed to teach you the
fundamentals as well as the advanced skills of each
sport. In just a few weeks you gain lifetime fitness
skills that can provide benefits long after the summer.
Electives are taught by experienced staff and
coaches and include drills, conditioning, training
methods, rule interpretations and scrimmages. All
electives are open to boys and girls and are tailored
to participants’ age and skill level. Emphasis is
placed on self-improvement, sportsmanship and
teamwork. You enroll in an athletic elective for the
full five-week session.
Intramural Athletics
For many students, the option to play their favorite
sports is an important feature of the Summer Session.
In addition to the instructional athletics offered
in afternoon electives, we have a robust intramural
program that offers you, at whatever your level of
expertise, a chance to compete against other teams
of students and faculty on campus.
Twice a week, you can compete individually, in
tennis, or against other teams in soccer, basketball
and volleyball. Teams (or individuals, in the case of
tennis) who have the best records compete against
one another in a tournament held in the final week
of the Summer Session.
The semi-final and final games in our intramural
tournaments have traditionally been among the most
popular and exciting events on campus. Those who
do not wish to compete cheer their friends on.
Our head coaches, all of whom have experience
coaching during the academic year, organize these
intramural games.
Teams are organized by ability level so that everyone
gets a chance to play, and coaches ensure that, above
all, the athletes learn the value of mutual respect,
good sportsmanship, and teamwork. The intramural
program takes place between dinner and study hall.
