Summer Videos

New England offers the perfect backdrop for a summer of learning, friendship and fun at Cushing Academy. The region offers a unique combination of natural beauty, historical sites, recreational activities and cultural events.

During each week of the session, we offer a special all-school activity. Some are held on campus. For others, we transport the entire student body and faculty off-campus for a day or evening of fun.

Week III - International Evening

International Evening is a celebration of the rich cultural diversity present at Cushing during the summer session. During the first week of classes, students and advisors begin rehearsing songs, skits and dances representative of their cultures. Planning also gets underway for food preparation and exhibits of costume and objects of art.

On International Evening bright posters and flags, tables of cultural artifacts, strains of exotic music and the vibrant elegance of dozens of students in traditional dress transform Cushing's dining hall into an international bazaar. Students and faculty view displays, sample food and ask questions about each other's cultures. The evening concludes with a student-created variety show featuring instrumental music, skits, singing and dancing representative of the participants' cultures.

Week IV - Summer Fling

The Summer Fling transforms the campus into a playground for teens, with giant blow-up toys, a human gyroscope, loud music and a cookout. A perennial Cushing summer favorite.

Week VI - Graduation Dinner

The Cushing Graduation Dinner brings the entire summer session community together for a very special and festive evening. Gathering in the dining hall for this formal dinner, students are presented with certificates recognizing their academic accomplishments. Student speakers, the awarding of academic distinction for each class and a performance by the chorus round out this summer tradition. The evening culminates in a dance where students have the opportunity to spend time with each other and to exchange addresses with friends made during the summer at Cushing.

Weekend Excursions

Excursions add fun, cultural enrichment and intellectual stimulation to the summer session experience. For example, there are weekend trips to Quincy Market, Red Sox baseball games at Fenway Park or shopping on world-famous Newbury Street. Visits to amusement parks, shopping malls and cinemas on Saturdays and Sundays are interspersed with off-campus trips for hiking, biking or canoeing. We send buses to L.L. Bean in Freeport, Maine and to the theater district in Boston.

To ensure our students' safety and enjoyment on trips away from campus, all weekend excursions are chaperoned by faculty members who oversee off-campus activities. On all excursions, Prep for Success students are supervised in small groups by faculty chaperones.

So come to Cushing expecting to experience an exciting, challenging academic program and also to enjoy the riches of New England, one of the world's great intellectual, cultural and recreational centers.
