  • Credit Courses for a Competitive Edge

    Cushing’s College Prep program lets you dive deeply into a subject of your choice so you come away with greater understanding and dramatically improved skills. In addition, our College Prep courses give you an advantage for future studies in related fields.
  • “Step Up” to Honors and AP

    Our summer programs are a great way to “Step Up” to higher-level classes. The rigorous College Prep program provides the skills and knowledge necessary for more advanced courses in high school.
  • Weekend Activities and Events

    Classes are just a part of your life at Cushing Academy during the Summer Session. On weekends, we offer a host of activities and events to appeal to every interest.
     
    Boston Harbor Cruise
    This is an evening for dining, dancing, and enjoying the company of friends aboard the Spirit of Boston, the premier cruise ship in Boston Harbor.
     
    Some of our most popular weekend trips include:

    • Movies! 12 Cinema Theater, Mall at Whitney Field

    Summer Olympics
    Unwind from your studies during the Summer Olympics. The campus becomes a playground for a day with high-energy games, fun food, loud music, and plenty of opportunities to make new friends.
     
    International Evening
    International Evening is a celebration of the rich cultural diversity at Cushing during the Summer Session. During the first week of classes, students and advisors begin rehearsing songs, skits, and dances representative of their cultures. Planning also gets underway for food preparation and groups begin creating posters, artwork, and table displays.
     
    Cabaret
    Summer Session is a time to shine–not just in the classroom and studio–but also on stage. On this night, students and faculty have the opportunity to participate in the Cushing Cabaret, a super-fun variety show that features songs, dances, and all sorts of entertaining (and often hilarious!) acts. This not-to-be-missed event is the perfect way to celebrate the talented, adventurous, and spirited members of our school community, and each year it features some truly inspiring—and often surprising—performances! 
  • Competitive Athletics

    Students will have the opportunity to play on competitive soccer or basketball teams during Summer Session. These teams will practice each day in a double elective period and compete against local schools each week. Note: The Competitive Athletic program is selective and will hold try-outs during the first week of Summer Session. Other opportunities to participate in soccer or basketball are available in our Instructional Athletics and/or Intramural programs.
  • Robotics and Engineering

    Students have ample opportunities to pursue their interests in both robotics and engineering. Our Prep for Success program offers a stand-alone robotics course, as well as the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in STEM classes (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). In addition, a more advanced engineering class is offered as an afternoon elective.
  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)

    Our Prep for Success program offers classes in science, technology, engineering, and math, also known as STEM. Through inquiry-based projects, this interdisciplinary class integrates the four disciplines using real-world applications.
  • College-level Scientific Research

    Our College-level Scientific Research program provides high school scholars with a hands-on research experience across several disciplines. Students will conduct research in a chosen field and acquire critical analytical skills through the scientific process (inquiry, research, hypothesis, testing, analysis). The course culminates in a formal research paper and presentation.
  • Leadership Opportunities in academics, athletics, and residential life

    Through community engagement and hands-on experience, students in the Summer Session Leadership program will gain the confidence and skills necessary to inspire and motivate their peers in all areas of life at school. In this process, participants will become familiar with the “tools” of effective leadership: innovation, problem solving, entrepreneurship, modeling, and purposeful change.
  • Academic Skill Building

    With study in both English (reading and writing) and mathematics, our Critical Skills program will help you will master the essential building blocks for success. In this process you will sharpen important study skills such as time-management, research, strategies for test taking, and note taking.
  • SAT Prep/TOEFL Prep

    Focus on the verbal and mathematical skills and the test-taking techniques required for your success on the SAT. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required for entrance into most American colleges and universities. This course provides you a thorough review of the types of questions that appear on the TOEFL examination, including the Internet Based Test (iBT).
  • Visual and Performing Arts

    Studio Art and Portfolio Preparation - nurturing the artist within 
    This five-week course introduces students to the fundamentals of color, composition, line, and space used in media from pencil, canvas, metals, photographs, watercolor, and oil as you learn through hands-on practice of the techniques covered in class.
     
    Afternoon Electives
    Visual and Performing Arts electives have included dance, theater, instrumental music, photography, painting and drawing, silversmithing, sculpture, pottery, and stained glass.
  • English for Language Learners

    Our English for Language Learners program includes English immersion, intensive TOEFL preparation, and experiences in American culture. Increase your English proficiency in just five weeks!
