  • Ice Hockey - Girls, Varsity

    2015 - 2016
    Head Coach: Courtney Sheary

Cushing Academy’s Varsity Girls’ Hockey team has experienced great success since its founding in 1995. We offer an extremely competitive team experience that competes in the Division I level in the NEPSAC. While Cushing participates in the highest level of high school girls’ hockey in North America, we also focus on basic hockey skills and tactics, and pay great attention to the little details that makes the Cushing hockey experience one that is unique and incredibly successful.

We emphasize teamwork, fair play, and above all else, sportsmanship on and off the ice. We are committed to growth in skills both mentally and physically, and pay close attention to all aspects of the game that develop the most successful student-athletes possible. Our team is on the ice 6 days a week playing over 30 games a season from early November through early March.

Our top-notch Iorio Arena, located right on campus, is where we train and play all home games. It is also home to our own locker room, spin cycle bikes, and cardio room. We embrace the opportunity to skate throughout the fall and spring, as the ice is available for all students all school year long. We also enjoy off-ice weightlifting and plyometrics in the new Watkins Field House. We have access to two full-time athletic trainers that are certified and available for our athletes at all times, and onsite strength and conditioning trainers who work with our coaching staff and athletes to provide guidance on sport-specific physical development.

Our hockey program is proud of our players’ leadership and involvement in the Cushing community far beyond the rink. Our student-athletes serve as dorm proctors, peer leaders, student government, and admissions touring, and nearly 100% of our players are three-season athletes.

Each year, Cushing hosts the well-known E.G. Watkins Girls’ Holiday Tournament, during which eight prep school teams compete at the highest level while providing exposure to dozens of DI and DIII women’s college coaches who make the trip to our arena for the event.

Cushing girls’ hockey has produced hundreds of high-level female athletes who have gone on to play in college over the past 20 years. Two recent graduates and Olympians, Meghan Duggan ‘06 and Erika Lawler ‘05 attended University of Wisconsin after Cushing. Other Cushing alumni have made their mark on women’s hockey teams at such colleges and universities as Providence, Northeastern, Ohio State, UNH, Middlebury, Merrimack, Brown, and Harvard to name a few.
