For over 30 years, our program has been the best of its kind and is designed to address each student's learning needs through individualized strategies, skills, accommodations, and instructional support.
Cushing's Academic Support teachers work as learning specialists, educational counselors, and advisors. By helping students navigate life and academics in a boarding school environment, our faculty members strive to prepare students to become independent lifelong learners.
"Academic Support helped me so much. I always knew I was smarter than the grades I was getting before I came to Cushing. I credit the preparation I got here for getting me into my first-choice college.” – Cushing graduate
How does it work?
Each student is placed with a learning specialist who uses current research in brain-based learning to provide instruction and advice, reviews setbacks for better understanding of what and how to change, and celebrates successes.
Students meet with their learning specialist four times each week during a regularly-scheduled class period. Students have the option of enrolling in Academic Coaching (1:1) and Academic Support (4:1) as well as math and reading skills classes.
Using the students' content area class assignments for materials, learning specialists help students develop a variety of strategies for improving organization and time management, reading comprehension, vocabulary and word skills, written expression, note taking, test preparation, and performance.
Learning specialists monitor each student's progress and receive regular communication about performance from content area teachers.
Admission to Academic Support
Admission to the program is based upon students' past academic achievement, current academic goals, and diagnostic testing, as well as teacher, counselor, parent or self-referrals. Student progress is assessed by Academic Support faculty as they make placement recommendations for the following year.
There is an $8,500 enrollment fee for the Academic Support Program with the 4:1 classroom ratio; for Academic coaching with a 1:1 ratio, the fee is $16,000. If you have any questions regarding the Academic Support Program please email email@example.com.
