The Cushing Academy community recognizes the individual styles and needs of each student. Those enrolled in our Academic Support Program come from many different backgrounds, schools, states, and countries and have varied academic histories, learning styles, and educational needs. We are here to help students recognize their strengths and weaknesses, and develop the tools and skills needed to meet the expectations of the school, their families, and themselves.
Academic Support students may have had some academic difficulties in the past, which have affected their motivation and perception of themselves as learners. With this in mind, our department's three primary offerings -- Reading Skills, Math Skills, and Academic Support -- provide students with concentrated, individualized instruction in small groups. We also offer Academic Coaching, which provides 1:1 support. Our goal is to equip students with skills and habits that will give them confidence and help them achieve academic success.
Students in our program develop stronger verbal reasoning, fluency in written language, and a wider spectrum of problem-solving skills. They learn to manipulate information derived from reading and other sources, and incorporate it into their own work (papers, oral presentations, and exams). If needed, teachers also assist students with their academic work, by helping with assignments, re-teaching basic language and math skills, and conferring on topics to be discussed in class.
