Boarding Students: What to Bring

As we near the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year, you may be wondering, “What Do I Bring to Campus?” The Office of Student Affairs hopes that the following list will be helpful for you, as you begin to imagine yourself living and learning on Cushing’s campus.
Cushing provides every boarding student with a standard twin bed, desk, desk lamp, wooden desk chair, bureau and closet space and trash can.  This year, Cushing will also provide all students with two reusable face coverings.

Special considerations for the 2020-2021 school years, related to the health and wellness of our community:
  • All students should plan to bring at least 10 washable, reusable, cloth face coverings. We ask that these face coverings are aligned with our community’s dress code.

  • Students are highly encouraged to bring cleaning materials and supplies, such as disinfectant spray and or wipes, paper towels, cleaning cloths, and hand sanitizer and liquid hand soap for personal use.

  • Students may be asked to have their windows open more frequently, to increase airflow and ventilation. In addition to a fan, families may want to consider bringing a portable HEPA/UV air filter/purifier to help eliminate environmental allergens in your dorm room.

  • Students are asked to not bring outside furniture or rugs to campus.

  • Students may want to consider bringing a blanket or a camping type chair for outdoor use.

  • When packing, students are also asked to limit the amount of personal belongings and decorations that they bring to campus. We understand the desire for students to personalize their rooms, however, this year, additional items can make cleaning efforts more difficult.
The following information is provided for your convenience. Please feel free to contact the Office of Student Affairs at 978-827-7015 or studentaffairs@cushing.org if you have any questions.

  • Sheets (2 sets), pillow, pillowcases (4), blankets and comforters for a standard size twin bed
  • Bed risers to increase the height of the bed and allow for more storage under the bed

  • Cell phone with a United States' phone number connected to a wireless carrier.  The phone cannot rely solely on Wi-Fi to place a phone call.  Cushing requires that a student’s voicemail is set up and can receive messages. AT&T has the best coverage in Ashburnham.
  • Personal computer or tablet
  • Surge protector for electronics
  • Alarm clock (other than your cell phone)
  • Flashlight and spare batteries

  • Towels (2)
  • Washcloths (2)
  • Toiletries
  • A small basket or case for carrying toiletries
  • Flip Flops or slippers for the shower

Additional Items

  • Clothes hangers

  • Specialized sports equipment as needed
  • Umbrella
  • Safe or lockbox for securing valuables.*
*Please note that the Office of Student Affairs will need to be able to access student safes in order to ensure the safety of all students on campus.
