Cushing Academy accepts three forms of application for admission, outlined below. Choose the most convenient one for you, but please select only ONE application methodSubmitting multiple applications will delay the processing of your application.
    1. SSAT Standard Online Application (SAO)

    2. The Gateway to Prep Schools Application

Through the SAO and Gateway applications, you will be able to request recommendations and your transcript plus submit essays. Search for Cushing Academy within either of these application systems, complete the application, and your information will be sent to the Academy.

    3. Cushing Academy Admissions Application
This application also includes submitting recommendations and essays.
  • Register for standardized testing (not required for 2021 admission)

Currently, Cushing does not require standardized testing for applicants. Ninth and 10th grade applicants may still submit Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) scores. Please include Cushing’s School Code (2698) when you register for the test, as Cushing will only accept scores directly from SSAT.

Eleventh grade and post-graduate applicants who would like to submit test scores should instruct your school to submit PSAT, SAT, or ACT scores directly to Cushing, or email them in PDF format along with your transcript.

International students are required to submit the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT) or the Duolingo test. The standardized testing listed by grade above are currently optional. Please include Cushing’s School code (9176) when you register for the language tests, as Cushing will only accept scores directly from ETS (Educational Testing Service) or Duolingo. Click here to register for your required TOEFL iBT.

Any applicant with a WISC or with an evaluation of a learning style difference and who would like to be considered for the Academic Support program must submit relevant testing via email in PDF format when applying through the SAO.

In some instances (as with the COVID-19 pandemic), we will waive standardized testing. If you have questions about standardized testing requirements, please email Catherine Pollock, Associate Head of School for Enrollment, at
  • Ask your English and Math teachers for a recommendation

Each applicant must submit recommendations from their English and Math teachers. Our experience is that the earlier you tell your teachers that you will need a recommendation, the more positive those recommendations are! Talk to your teachers soon.
  • Ask one other adult for a recommendation (optional)

Cushing Academy welcomes an additional recommendation from an adult in an applicant's life, though this is optional. That person might be a teacher, neighbor, boss, clergyperson, or another adult who knows the student well.
  • Send your transcript

Request your grades and transcript from your school by using the form provided on the Standard Online Application (SAO) or Gateway to Prep Schools application. Remember to allow plenty of time to have your transcript sent to Cushing Academy by the February 1 deadline.
  • Begin writing your essays

In all three application options, you will find three essay prompts. The earlier you begin to draft those essays, the more time you will have to revise and rewrite them.
  • Click submit

Be sure to send in your application by February 1, 2020! We review applications immediately and send out admissions decisions on March 10.
  • Applying for need-based financial aid?

Cushing Academy has a robust need-based financial aid budget. Families seeking need-based financial aid must complete the application for need-based financial aid by February 1, 2021. More information about how to apply for need-based financial aid is here.
