Teaching Fellow: History
Cushing Academy seeks to hire a Teaching Fellow in History for the 2019-2020 academic year.
Cushing Academy is committed to promoting the professional development of teachers new to independent schools. The Cushing Academy Teaching Fellows Program allows recent college graduates the opportunity to develop teaching skills with the support of mentor teachers and administration, while also becoming fully involved in the life of our boarding school community.
Each Teaching Fellow is assigned a mentor teacher in the same discipline who provides guidance with the academic work of the Fellow. Teaching Fellows typically teach two sections in their discipline and visit classes of the mentor teacher and other teachers. The Dean of Faculty and the Academic Department Chair also assist with lesson planning, curriculum development, and teaching methods.
Additional responsibilities of Cushing Teaching Fellows include involvement in afternoon co-curricular activities for three seasons, supervision of dormitories, and weekend duties. In carrying out these responsibilities, Teaching Fellows receive support and direction from experienced coaches, dorm parents, and advisors. Teaching Fellows are involved in all other aspects of school life, including serving as an advisor and participation in All-School Dinners, assemblies, and study hall.
The Cushing Teaching Fellows program includes weekly meetings to address a variety of areas of professional development. Coordinated by the Dean of Faculty, these meetings offer an opportunity for regular dialogue with leaders from the Academic Office, Student Life Office, and other areas of school life.
Teaching Fellows receive a salary and benefits including housing, meals, and coverage under the school's health insurance program.
The appointment of a Teaching Fellow is for one year. A Teaching Fellow may subsequently apply for any position at the Academy for which he or she may be qualified. Teaching Fellows are full members of the Cushing faculty.
