James Aseltine David Halvorsen Leonard Morley

Halvorsens, Morleys, and Aseltines

From Bob Cook '62
My freshman year at Cushing was 1958-59, and my residence was Lowe Hall.   This was the first year for Dave and Jan Halvorsen as well as the first year for Len and Mary Morley.   Len and Mary lived on the first floor of Lowe Hall while Dave and Jan lived on the second floor of Lowe Hall.   They were all a very important part of our Cushing experience.

Len Morley taught math and other subjects and Dave Halvorsen also taught math. Jim and Barbara Aseltine joined us in 1961 and Jim taught economics and physical science. Mr. Heslin taught us geometry as he did to so many students throughout his illustrious career at Cushing.
Along with Paul Heslin, Len Morley coached us in football, as did Jim Aseltine during my senior year of 1961-62.

Dave Halvorsen was our hockey coach for all four years! Dave had come out of Brown University where he had been their goalie.  We could not have asked for a better coach and his wife Jan rarely ever missed a chance to cheer us on during some of our colder games during those winters.   Our rink was outside on Quimby Field (the football field) and we had to spray our own ice during the evenings by taking turns in shifts.

Mr. Heslin and Jim Aseltine coached basketball during the winter sports season.
In the spring, Mr. Heslin coached us in baseball, while Len Morley was busy with the track team.

We all learned a great deal from them, and they were very instrumental in our athletic development.

There are many stories and memories we all have of our times at Cushing.  For me, hockey stands out as one of my finest experiences due to Dave Halvorsen’s coaching and patience.  I went on to play hockey at the University of Vermont, and I can honestly say that Dave was probably the key factor in my hockey development.
However, we are forever grateful to all of them for their guidance and patience during our great times at Cushing !!
