Paul Heslin

from Dick Ripley '65
Paul Heslin was my football, varsity basketball and varsity baseball coach and the reason I chose a career as a math teacher and coach. I recently retired after 44 years as an educator.

I first met Coach Heslin when I went to pick up my football gear in September of 1963. He looked at my name card and asked me if my father had ever pitched for Deerfield Academy. I said no but my uncle did in 1935! What a memory. My uncle went on to pitch in a couple of games for the Red Sox that summer as an 18 year old. Incidentally my father attended Wilbraham and grandfather Andover.

I looked at all of those schools but fell in love with Cushing after several visits with the Garfield family watching their son play ball for Coach Heslin. Coach Heslin was a wonderful role model. I remember him raking the baseball infield before practice or a game. He was always encouraging and never had a bad word for anyone. His wife Penny was the perfect complement to him and I recall many games that she attended and would sometimes sit with my parents.
