The application for Cushing Summer Session 2019 is open and online. Be sure to apply early and reserve your seat for "The Best Summer Ever!"

Summer Session Program Highlights: July 20

Students enrolled in Summer Session’s Critical Skills program added a new dimension to their reading this week with an author chat via Skype. Many thanks to Cynthia Kadohata, the author of Cracker! The Best Dog in Vietnam, for providing an opportunity for students to engage in conversation and to ask questions about her life, her writing, and her books.
Prep for Success: Our classroom highlight his week was the ESL class' performance of "The Wizard of Oz". We were all so proud of our courageous ESL students who performed in front of the entire program. Bravo to the students and their teachers for a wonderful performance! Also this week, our students and faculty hiked up nearby Mt. Watatic. The climb was a challenge, but the students handled it with grit and grace! Upon reaching the summit, they were rewarded with 360-degree views of central New England and the Boston skyline in the horizon. It was a preview to next week when we will venture into Boston proper for our last field trip!
Intramural basketball plays two times per week with coed teams of mixed ability. Currently, we have 4 teams, each with approximately 10 players. The team names are based on the colors of current NBA teams: Oklahoma City Thunder (blue), Boston Celtics (green) Chicago Bulls (red) and Indiana Pacers (yellow). Currently the Oklahoma City Thunder is in first place.
Competitive basketball is a new program this year, with 10 players of all ages on one coed team. The team practices two hours each day and reviews an abundance of high level skills and drills. Cushing has already played against NMH and Narragansett Summer Basketball League.
Studio Art: After finishing their charcoal still life drawings, students spent time this week in the pottery studio and making progress on pencil self-portraits. In the pottery studio, students have made multiple wheel-thrown bowls and mugs. They've also worked on their hand-building skills making pinch pots, coil vessels constructed using plaster molds, and slab-rolled luminaries (or candle holders). At this point, each student has made around a dozen finished works of art. That number is rising quickly as we head into the final stretch of SS '18! Next week we'll take a deep dive into our metalsmithing studio. Everyone has made copper rings; their next metals project will be to make a sterling silver ring adorned with a cabochon stone. The group is looking forward to Wednesday's trip to the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum.
