Stick It to Cancer Fundraiser Hits Close to Home

On Saturday, Oct. 24, Cushing hosted the annual "Stick It to Cancer" field hockey game fundraiser, this year during the Tabor match-up on Fall Family Weekend. Each year the team organizes a fundraiser to raise money in the name of someone suffering from cancer. Last year’s honoree was a young girl in town who is battling brain cancer. The 2015 game honored our very own CA staff member Jimmie-Gaye Buono who is battling this terrible disease.

T-shirts in Jimmie-Gaye’s favorite color—red—were on sale during the week leading up to the game, and thanks to the generosity of our students, faculty, parents, and friends, they sold out. In addition to accepting donations, the team organized a bake sale and raffle with the help of players’ parents and members of the Cushing community.

We were fortunate to have Jimmie-Gaye join us during the game and for a ceremony on the field prior to the game’s start. Said player Ronnie Callahan ’17, “This year’s Stick It to Cancer event was so important because we dedicated it to somebody who is very close to our hearts. It was so nice to finally to see her and to make her smile, because after all she's been through, she truly deserved it.” Field Hockey Coach Cara Clarke couldn’t agree more.Having Jimmie-Gaye at the game with her family was an incredible moment for me and the team. To see her smiling face and to have her on the field with us reminded me once again how important she is to our community. I can only hope this short moment in her day helped to relieve some of the stress and pain that comes with this disease. She is an incredibly courageous and strong woman, and on Saturday Jimmie-Gaye reminded us all of what is important in life."

Proceeds from the fundraiser will be split between Jimmie-Gaye and Dana Farber.
