Valerie Bono ’97: Varsity Girls’ Ice Hockey Coach

As you likely know, girls’ hockey coach Courtney Sheary ‘06 has decided that this will be her last year at Cushing. Courtney has served Cushing so well and with such heart not only with respect to the girls’ hockey team, but also as a member of the athletics department, coach of other sports, and member of our dormitory faculty. She’ll certainly be missed on campus on a daily basis, but she’ll forever be a Penguin, involved in the Academy, and committed to maintaining a strong relationship with our amazing hockey program.
Moving forward, it is with real excitement that we announce Valerie Bono ’97 as Cushing Academy’s next varsity girls’ ice hockey coach.
Our new coach has a distinguished career as a Cushing alumna, player, and coach, and, equally if not more impressively, as a business owner. Valerie Bono graduated from Cushing Academy in 1997, where she not only excelled athletically—captaining varsity ice hockey, soccer, softball, and earning the Bette Davis Award for Highest Proficiency in Athletics—but also academically and socially, serving as a Proctor in Sawyer-Hopkins Hall and Student Body President. Upon graduating from Cushing, she went onto Providence College, where she majored in Management & Finance and played Division 1 ice hockey. Valerie was a four-year starter, playing in all 96 games in her college career and leading the Friars in game-winning and power-play goals, which earned her awards like Top League Defenseman and Most Improved Player. She has also been involved with USA Hockey as a player at the National Development camps and holds a Level 5 Master Coaching certificate. Since graduating from Providence College in 2001, she has worked for her successful family business, Golden Cannoli Shells Company, where she is currently the second-generation owner and Chief Sales & Marketing Officer.
During her post-college years, she has remained intimately involved and connected in greater-Boston area hockey. From 2001-11 she served as varsity head girls’ ice hockey coach at Burlington High School. Additionally, during the 2009-10 season, she served as an assistant coach for the Wizard’s Elite U14-1 girls’ hockey team out of Bedford; and during the 2010-12 seasons she served as the head coach of the Boston Shamrocks Elite U14-1 girls’ hockey team out of Wilmington. Valerie has also owned and operated successful ice hockey camps and clinics through Massachusetts youth hockey programs for player and team development and has organized free clinics for youth teams in Burlington and surrounding programs.
Simply put, in bringing Valerie Bono back to Cushing Academy, we have added a great educator, coach, alumna, and person to our school community and ice hockey program. She is very excited to begin work with our girls’ hockey players and families. So that she can express her excitement in her own words and so that she can begin to build strong Cushing relationships to the benefit of everyone, Coach Bono will soon reach out to families and players.
In the mean time, please let us know if you have any questions.
