Opening Convocation

Cushing ushered in the start of the 2016-2017 academic year with Convocation on Drew Common on Sunday, Sept. 4. Speakers included Rebecca Pressman, English Department Chair, who spoke about honoring the juxtaposition of consistency and change, and that we all have the opportunity to welcome a new year as a chance to change and grow. Andrew Charman ’17, Student Body President, compared the school year to a game of Texas Hold’em: cards are dealt -- and those cards can be anything -- but one bad hand does not determine the outcome of the game. He reminded his fellow seniors of the importance of leaving a legacy.
After introducing and formally welcoming our new faculty members, Headmaster Chris Torino focused on three fundamentals of the Cushing experience: honor, self-control, and play. He asked that all of us at Cushing live by these elements, “because these elements elevate our lives. Living with honor, self-control, and play heighten not only the expectations we have of ourselves and one another here and now, but also the results, achievements, and, ultimate, well-being of our lives beyond. They elevate our individual and collective journey through this school year, in our Cushing education.” At the conclusion of the ceremony, the community processed to Quimby Field for the all-school handshake, and then to the dining hall for the year’s first formal dinner.
