Second Annual Diversity Forum Series

On Tuesday, Oct. 25, we kicked off the second annual Diversity Forum Series with guest speaker Rosetta Lee. Ms. Lee, a faculty member at the innovative Seattle Girls' School and nationally renowned educator in the area of diversity, equity and inclusion, spoke about cross-cultural communication. She taught us to recognize that our messages are not always received as we intend them to be, nor do we always accurately hear what others say; and that our cultural values and our personality traits influence our interpretation of each other. Using personal anecdotes, she provided frameworks for understanding cultural competency and gave us skills to better understand ourselves and one another. Her message, "In order to be excellent at any one thing, you must first be excellent with each other", reminds us of the importance of our daily efforts to communicate well with each other. To be sure, effective and empathic communication will lead to more fulfilling experiences for each of us -- here and in our lives beyond Cushing.
