Proposals and Debates in Mock Town Hall Meetings

Students in Mr. Macioci’s Civil Society class recently took on the roles of mayors and city council members of mid-sized American cities in an effort to examine the democratic process of town hall meetings. Divided into small groups, they discussed, analyzed, and attempted to solve several major issues facing their cities such as budget deficits and taxes, upgrading public school facilities, the economical impact of increased crime rates, and the threat of teachers’ strikes. Fellow classmates, along with faculty and staff volunteers, posed questions and challenged the proposals from the points of view of concerned citizens such as parents, laborers, business owners, and seniors. Held annually, this project proved once again to be an engaging exercise and social learning opportunity with thoughtful discussion and debate.
