On Jan. 21, hundreds of thousands of men and women around the globe marched in support of women’s rights. Members of the Cushing community joined in this global expression of solidarity.
It was a beautiful day and the sun shined bright as the community marched. The event started on Friday night with about 25 folks making signs and getting ready in the Alumni Hall common room. On Saturday, 60 members of the community joined in the march, which was low key and positive. The students were engaged, the faculty children understood that they were part of an important message about equality, and the adults were happy and reflective. The event lasted about an hour.
History teacher Susie Cirone, who helped plan the event spoke about the reasons for the march. “We join together in solidarity, or in unity, with women, girls, men, boys (and some good campus dogs) to acknowledge the potential we have to improve our schools, communities, cities, states, nations, and world to achieve positive measures that we have not yet made real,” she said. She went on, “Our tone is purposefully positive and inclusive. Perhaps this feels counter-cultural, but they are high standards that we can achieve. CA Girls, we march for you. CA Boys, we march for you. Colleagues, friends, neighbors, faculty and staff children (and good dogs!) we march as commitment to you.”
Yashi Thakurani '18 spoke about Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 and what its purpose is. Co-head of school Peggy Lee spoke about the contributions of women at the Emily Fisher Landau Center for the Arts. The group ended at Alumni steps where they wrote chalk messages about steps for progress.
