This year, 90 students have dorm assignments in our newest residence halls. The new dorms have names that will be familiar to many members of the Cushing family: Lee House and Sanborn House.
Lee House is named after our current co-Head of School, Peggy Lee. Mrs. Lee is beginning her 34th year at Cushing as a member of our faculty, during which time she has served in a variety of roles. She has taught ESL and English. She has been an advisor, dorm head, department chair, international student advisor, coordinator of the drug/alcohol assessment team, member of the standing discipline committee, Director of Academic Affairs, Chair of the Curriculum Committee, coordinator of the 2006 NEASC self-study, advisor to the Astronomy Club, and most recently served as Director of Summer Session before she became co-Head of School in January 2017. She’s impacted the lives of thousands of students during her time at the Academy and we’re grateful for her continued service and commitment to our community. Lee House is located across from the Fisher-Watkins Dining Commons and houses 45 female students and four faculty families.
Sanborn House is named in honor of Cushing’s longtime Athletic Director, Wayne Sanborn. Coach Sanborn arrived at Cushing in 1974 and served the school and its community until his retirement in 2011. While he’s influenced and touched the lives if many in the extended community, he’s perhaps most remembered for his commitment to the Academy’s football program from the very beginning of his tenure. In his first two years, when there weren’t enough players to field a football team, Coach Sanborn worked to combine the Cushing and Winchendon School teams. Back then, Coach Sanborn’s goal was to build a Cushing squad that could compete against the best prep school teams. He certainly did that, and his teams came to be among the best in Cushing’s history. He also coached just about every team the Academy fielded—including baseball, lacrosse, wrestling, and girls’ basketball—and held a number of administrative positions as well. He continues to be a revered member of our Cushing family and we’re proud to honor him by adding his name to one of our new dorms. Sanborn House is located adjacent to the Iorio Arena and houses 45 male students and four faculty families.
We’ll be sure to post more photos once students and faculty are settled in!
