It was an engaging and empowering day for female student-athlete leaders during the inaugural Girls in Sport Leadership Summit hosted by Cushing Academy on Monday, April 23. The attendees, who were hand-selected by their coaches at schools from around New England, were provided with a day’s worth of leadership programming and high-level workshops in which they were challenged to examine their leadership style, skills, and experiences.
Following a keynote address by Belle Koclanes, Head Coach of Women’s Basketball at Dartmouth College, students attended workshops facilitated by coaches and administrators from Cushing, Deerfield, Williston Northampton, Lawrence Academy, and Worcester Academy, and two students from Hebron Academy. Featured topics included handling adversity, why and how to coach a drill, the impact of playing time on leadership and team dynamics, and what coaches look for in a captain. Prior to the final session, guests gathered for a panel discussion over lunch with panelists Val Bono, Sarah Segesdy, and Jamie Gilbert, all of whom are boarding school graduates, collegiate athletes, and current coaches.
Throughout the day, several themes emerged organically, such as self-care, being present, having fun, and self-reflection. “Today is a day you gave to yourself – a day to pause and reflect, to honor the leader you are, and to spend time with role models,” said Dr. Jennifer Willis, who organized the Summit at Cushing. “You are all in this room because you identify as a leader and others identify you as a leader. I hope you leave with the same sense of shared empowerment and remember that you inspire people. And while you may not see the effects every day, your leadership makes an impact. Encourage one another. Care for yourself so you can care for your teammates and move your team forward. We are all on each other’s team.”
