VBBIH vs. Dexter Southfield School: CA 3; Dexter Southfield 2 (OT)
Cushing Academy – 3
Dexter Southfield School – 2
The Cushing Varsity “B” Boys’ Hockey team opened their 2018-2019 campaign with a home game at Iorio Arena vs. Dexter Southfield School. It was an entertaining back-and-forth overtime home opener where the Penguins pulled out a 3-2 victory. The returning players had high motivation for this game and shared it with the new guys on the team as the team was out for revenge after an opening season loss to Dexter Southfield last season.
Despite the high motivation and coming out of the tunnel on fire, there were some early season jitters and miscues on the part of the Penguins and it allowed Dexter Southfield to take a 1-0 lead halfway through the first period. The goal quickly got the Penguins focused and they responded with a goal of their own near the end of the first period. Defenseman Luke Kowalka ’20 broke the ice for the Penguins and knotted the score at 1-1 on a goal assisted by captain Adam Canfield ’19.
The second period passed without any goals by either team thanks in part to strong goaltending by both goalies. The teams were back-and-forth throughout this second period and neither team capitalized on scoring chances. Cushing’s first-year goalie Ben Speyer collected 27 saves on the day as put his first game as a Penguin under his belt.
The third period was a period of trading goals by both teams and led to an exciting finish. Cushing took their first lead of the game halfway through the third when defenseman Nick White ’19 unloaded a snipe from the high slot on a beautiful pass from forward Brendan Dougherty ’20. The Penguins clung to the lead until the final minutes of play when Cushing had two Penguins in the box and Dexter Southfield was on a 5-on-3 power play. Dexter Southfield did not let this opportunity slip through their grasp and they tied the game up at 2-2 with only 35 seconds left in the game.
With the game tied at 2-2 at the end of the third period the teams skated into overtime both hungry for the first win of the season. It was a thrilling overtime with end-to-end action and neither team being able to dominate overall. With only a minute left in the overtime, Penguins defenseman Canfield ’19 let go a shot from the point that founds its way to the back of the net for the game-winner. The assist on the game winning goal went to Garrett Young ’19 on a solid pass to the tape of Canfield’s stick.
It certainly was an exciting opening for the Penguins and the coaching staff was especially pleased with the boys’ effort and determination responding to the Dexter Southfield goals. The team looks to take the next couple days to work on improving some areas of their game as they look forward to hitting the road for their first away game vs. New Hampton this Saturday, Dec. 1st at 4:00pm.
