In front of a packed house, the Cushing Varsity Boys' Hockey team took care of Rt. 12 rivals Winchendon School with a convincing 4-0 victory. The Penguins got goals from four different players and goalie Joe Sharib '19 (Natick, MA) turned away all 22 of the shots he faced to earn his first shutout of the season.
Nick Cafarelli '20 (Middleton, MA) opened the scoring midway through the first period when he hustled down the right wing, used a decoy, and slipped it under the goalie's right pad. Brad Zona '19 (Auburn, MA) and Connor Wood '20 (St. Albans, VT) were credited with the assists on the first goal. After a penalty free first period, special teams played a role in the middle frame as the Penguins scored a power play goal and a short-handed goal to take a commanding three goal lead. Jake Hewitt '21 (Ashburnham, MA) tipped in a Lukas Gustafsson '21 (Alpharetta, GA) point shot on the man-up situation. Then it was Jacob Banks '20 (Westminster, MA) who flew by the Wapiti defense while killing a penalty and finished on a breakaway to give Banks his second short-handed goal of the season. Billy Norcross '21 (Lynn, MA) rounded out the scoring with his first as a Penguin. Assists on the Norcross goal went to Kyle McElhaney '20 (Natick, MA) and Zona, his third helper of the night.
The win moves the Penguins to 2-1 on the season and they look to continue their dominance at Iorio Arena with two afternoon home games next week. On Wednesday Dec. 5th, the team will take on Williston Northampton School at 3:30pm. Then on Saturday, Dec. 8th, the Hill School of Pennsylvania will make the trek to Ashburnham for a 3:00pm face-off.
