Cushing to Compete in Watkins Championship Game

After a come from behind win against Northfield Mount Hermon School and a shootout win against Lawrence Academy on Friday at the Edward G. Watkins Boy’s Hockey Tournament, the Varsity Boys’ Penguins looked to continue the streak. The Penguins were on a path to secure a victory on Saturday to lock up a first-place finish in the Fisher Division and therefore a trip to the tournament championship.  Standing in their way of advancing to the finals was Governor's Academy.

After a sloppy start, the Penguins were tied at two after the first period.  However, they stuck with their game plan and played more as a team after the first intermission. The team outscored Governor's 5-1 in the last two periods of the game resulting in a final score of 7-3 in favor of the Cushing Penguins.  The game featured seven different Penguin goal scorers, and the first start between the pipes for goalie Rio Kauffman '21 (Glenwood Springs, CO) who made 18 saves to earn his first win as a Penguin.

With the victory, the Penguins finish group play with a 2-0-1 record and punched their ticket to the title game against Thayer Academy. Thayer also finished at 2-0-1 to the Iorio Division, which included Culver Academy, Dexter Southfield School, and Canterbury School.  The championship game is scheduled for 3:30pm on Sunday, December 30th at Iorio Arena.
