Cushing Captures Title With 2-1 Win Over Thayer Academy
The Cushing Academy Varsity Boys’ Hockey team looked to close out the 2018 calendar year with an epic matchup in the finals of the Edward G. Watkins’ Boys’ Hockey Tournament. Cushing’s path to the championship game as a member of the Fisher Division included comeback wins against NMH and Lawrence (shootout) as well as a solid win over Governor’s. Thayer Academy took the Iorio Division with victories against Canterbury School, last year’s champion Culver Military Academy, and a tie against Dexter Southfield School.
After a scoreless opening period, the Penguins were spectacular in the second period by scoring twice.  Both goals were off the stick of Jacob Banks who was the offensive money for the Penguins on the day. Thayer replied in the third period with a goal of their own, but the Penguins hung on to the delight of the many Penguin family, friends, students, and faculty in attendance.
Brad Zona was in the zone as he logged the majority of the Penguin defensive minutes by playing in all situations and being pitted against Thayer's most dangerous forwards.  His tenacious penalty killing, relentless physical play, and tireless effort was instrumental in leading the Penguins to the 2-1 championship victory.
Jake Hewitt, Patrick Keegan, Zona, and Banks were all named to the All-Tournament Team.  Goalie Joe Sharib was named Tournament MVP for his spectacular play throughout the tournament and rock-solid saves in the championship game to help lead the team to victory.
The next action for the Penguins will be a home game on Saturday, January 5th with a 5:00pm puck drop against Brewster Academy. It will be the third of four games slated for the 10th Annual Pink the Rink event at Iorio Arena where all proceeds go to benefit Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
