VBBIH vs. Avon Old Farms School: CA 4; Avon 2

Cushing Academy – 4
Avon Old Farms School – 2
The Cushing Varsity Boys’ B Hockey team took to the road for an away game in Connecticut against Avon Old Farms School. The Penguins were looking to rebound from a couple tough losses to start the new year and knew they would need to take down an undefeated squad in 8-0-1 Avon.
The Penguins arrived in Connecticut determined and focused to play a complete game from start to finish. The team took a 1-0 lead in the first period when forward Nick White ’19 fired a shot on net which was redirected off an Avon defender and into the back of the net. After the first intermission, the Penguins hit the ice with energy and supplied consistent pressure against the Avon players. It didn’t take long before winger Andrew Erato ’20 entered into the offensive zone to fire an off-speed shot on and into the net for his first Cushing Penguin goal. Erato’s goal brought the Cushing lead to 2-0 and the assist was credited to newly converted forward Josh Levesque ’20. With Cushing on a five-minute major penalty kill, the Avon squad took advantage of the extra man to cut the lead to 2-1 within a minute of their power play starting. After the Beavers’ goal, the Penguins reset themselves and killed off the remaining four minutes of the penalty with determination and passion. That determination and passion paid off on the penalty kill when Trevor Hada ’20 netted two shorthanded goals to allow the Penguins to take a 4-1 lead over the home team. The Beavers would add another goal near the end of the second period, but that was as close the home team would get as the Penguins locked it down in the third period to hand the Beavers their first loss of the season. It was a true team effort with all 13 forwards, 7 defensemen, and goalie contributing to the victory. Between the pipes making a solid 31 saves was Ben Speyer ’20. The coaching staff was extremely proud of the team in their effort and focus as they look to continue to build on the momentum of the win.
Next-up is a rare Monday afternoon tilt with Hillside School on Jan. 13th at 4:45pm. The game is a rematch of an early season 1-1 tie so both teams will be hitting the ice of Iorio Arena looking to dominate and get the win.
Season Record: 4-3-1
