Martin Luther King Jr. Diversity Forum

In lieu of traditional classes, the Cushing community held its second Diversity Forum event of the year in conjunction with Martin Luther King Jr. Day. "Using Our Voices" was the theme of the day's engaging workshops, discussions, and performances. In an introductory assembly, Director of Diversity and Academic Support teacher Jessica Devin announced to students and faculty, "With King in mind, I give you the charge of today: Find your voice. Find the Cushing voice. Inspire speaking up, embolden speaking out, and celebrate the diversity that connects us all."

In one of the event's workshops, a number of students participated in Amnesty International's largest annual human rights campaign, Write For Rights, where they wrote letters to government officials on behalf of 11 women human rights defenders under threat. Their letters will soon join over 49,000 others currently collected by Amnesty International.

Other workshops included a lesson on formal debate competitions, poetry-writing and analysis, and the chance to create a short film. After a conversation-driven lunch break, students and faculty presented a showcase of creative dance numbers, songs, spoken word, and more on the Chapel stage. This Diversity Forum event was an excellent opportunity for our community to learn and connect in a variety of ways.
