VBB vs. Putnam Science Academy: CA 67; Putnam 78

Putnam Science Academy – 78
Cushing Academy – 67
The Cushing Varsity Boys’ Basketball team welcomed nationally top-5 ranked Putnam Science Academy to the Watkins Field for a Wednesday afternoon game. The Putnam squad entered the game on a 42-game win streak dating back to last season when their last loss was to the Penguins in the Watkins Field House. Cushing hoped to put forth a strong effort and hand Putnam their second straight loss to the Penguins. It was not unreasonable of the Penguins to feel confident in their abilities as they are off to a great start to their season having only dropped a single game early on to South Kent.
Early on Putnam struck first with a lay-up and a three to take a quick lead. The Mustangs were feeling the hot hand, but the Penguins took it upon themselves to enforce a strong defense with great efforts all around. Throughout the duration of the first half, Cushing played with great spirit and the crowd served as a solid sixth man. Just before going into the half Putnam put on a little run pushing their lead to 39-31, but the Penguins went into the locker room remaining confident.
Cushing came out of the half energized and battled back to regain the lead early in the second stanza. With four minutes left in the game, Putnam overtook the Penguins for the final time and sailed to victory in the end. It was a hard-fought game played on both ends of the court with the Penguins leaving everything they had on the court and it made it difficult for Cushing to swallow their second loss on the year. But the team competed well against a star-studded cast of top notch Putnam Science talent.
Scoring for Cushing:
Kyle Murphy – 19 points
Daman Tate – 15 points

Cushing will head to Kimball Union Academy on Saturday, Jan. 12th for a 4:30pm tip-off.
