VBBIH vs. Deerfield Academy: CA 4; DA 0

Cushing Academy – 4
Deerfield Academy – 0
The Cushing Varsity “B” Boys’ Hockey Penguins started fast against a strong Deerfield team Wednesday afternoon at Iorio Arena. The Penguins came out with lots of energy and were ready to get after it and get a win on home ice.
The scoring started early when Brendan Dougherty ’20 drove hard to the net to get a tip of passes from captain Josh Beese ’19 and defenseman Matt McFadden ’22. It wasn’t long after the Dougherty goal when Chase Davis ’21 collected a pass from defenseman Brian Lemay ’21 to snipe the Deerfield goalie high blocker from the top of the dots for a 2-0 lead. Later in the first it was newly converted forward Seamus Cummings ’22 taking a tape-to-tape pass from captain Adam Canfield ’19 to sneak into the offensive zone on a breakaway and finish with a sweet deke to fake out the goalie and give the Penguins a 3-0 lead after one.
In the second the Penguins fell into some penalty trouble and played most of the frame shorthanded letting the Big Green awaken and keep the score close. Big saves from Ben Speyer ‘20 kept the game 3-0 as the teams headed into the third period. After refocusing in the locker room, the Penguins came out tight defensively and got pucks deep burning clock until a power play insurance goal from Dougherty, his second of the game, with the assists going to Beese and Garret Young ‘19 gave the Penguins a late 4-0 lead. It was a total team effort as the Penguins rolled 3 lines and 6 D while goalie Speyer collected 27 solid saves for the shutout!
The coaching staff was proud of the boys’ effort and are excited to continue to improve before they face a stout Salisbury School team Saturday, Jan. 26th. The team will be hopping on the buses to head down to Salisbury for this 2:30pm game.
