VBIH vs. Northfield Mount Hermon School: CA 2; NMH 2

Cushing Academy – 2
Northfield Mount Hermon School – 2
The Cushing Varsity Boys’ Hockey team traveled to Gill, MA to take on the highly ranked Hoggers of Northfield Mount Hermon School.  Winners of three of their last four games, the Penguins looked to stay hot and keep pace with the top teams in New England.
It was a tight checking first period with neither team generating much offense, but shortly after Cushing killed off a penalty, the Hoggers snuck one past goaltender Joe Sharib ’19 for a first period lead.  Trailing by a goal in the second period, the Penguins pressed in an effort to equalize, but gave up a breakaway in the process.  After Sharib made the initial save, the puck caromed off a Hogger forward and into the net for the 2-0 lead.  The Penguins battled back and cut the lead in half with some terrific teamwork when Jake Hewitt ’20 picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and sent it deep.  Jacob Banks ’20 won the corner battle and centered it to Nick Cafarelli 20, who made no mistake about putting it into the net.  The Penguins played solid hockey all afternoon, but now with the momentum, they really started to tilt the ice in their favor.  With excellent cycling and puck possession, the Penguins tied it up when Shane Zarcone ‘20 won the puck off the wall and fed defenseman Cody Sealey ’21 at the point.  Sealey slid it to his defensive partner Patrick Keegan ‘19, who ripped it through traffic to knot it up at two.  The Penguins controlled the play for the rest of the game and looked poised to score the go-ahead goal, but time expired before they could make it happen and off to overtime the game went.  Despite outshooting the Hoggers 5-2 in the overtime period, and 31-17 overall for the game, the extra five minutes did not resolve anything and Cushing had to settle for the tie.
The Penguins play their next five games at home, starting with Phillips Exeter Academy on Saturday, Jan. 26th at Iorio Arena with face-off scheduled for 3:00pm.
