VBIH vs. Phillips Exeter Academy: CA 1; PEA 3

Phillips Exeter Academy – 3
Cushing Academy – 1

The Cushing Varsity Boys’ Hockey Penguins hosted rival Phillips Exeter Academy Saturday night and the Penguins came out flying. There was great energy and an early first period Penguin goal put the visitors back on their heels. Nick Cafarelli ‘20 lit the lamp low glove side when he received a great centering pass from Lukas Gustafsson ’21. The play was initiated by Jake Hewitt ’20 on a stretch pass breakout and it earned him an assist too. Later in the first period Exeter would tie the score at one.

In the second period the Penguins were called for multiple penalties and Exeter took advantage of a controversial goal that appeared to be kicked into the Penguin net. Original call on the ice was no goal, but after a discussion the officials determined there was no intentional kicking motion and it would be a good goal for Exeter to put the visitors up 2-1.

It was early in the third period when Exeter would score again to take a two-goal lead at 3-1.  Despite a push by the Penguins, multiple power play opportunities late in the game, pulling the goalie in favor of an extra attacker, and outshooting their opponents 34-21 on the night, Cushing fell to Exeter by a final score of 3-1.

Looking to get back on the winning track, the Penguins continue their home stand at Iorio Arena with a game against Hoosac School on Wednesday, Jan. 30th at 4:15pm.
