VBBIH vs. Kimball Union Academy: CA 8; KUA 3

Cushing Academy – 8
Kimball Union Academy - 3
The Cushing Varsity “B” Boys’ Hockey Penguins dominated a normally strong rival Kimball Union Academy from the opening faceoff Wednesday exploding for 8 goals in a convincing home win.
Forward Brendan Dougherty ’20 opened the scoring for the Penguins 15 seconds into the game when he collected a loose puck in the slot and beat the KUA goalie. Minutes later Cushing would add another when defensemen Frank Viacek ’20 broke down the wing and sniped the KUA goalie on an assist by Chase Davis ’21 to give the Penguins an early 2-0 lead. KUA battled back and held down the fort for a while before the Penguins broke through for 4-second period goals and built a 6-0 lead after two periods. In the third the Penguins gave up 3 goals on some sloppy play, but added 2 more for the 8-3 final.
Strong games were had out of Josh Beese ’19 with a 3-goal hat trick, Viacek throwing 2 goals behind the KUA goalie, and Chase Davis adding 3 helpers. Seamus Cummings ’22 continued his smooth transition to forward by creating offense and killing penalties. The defensive pairs of Shane McElhaney ’22 / Viacek and Adam Canfield ’19 / Brian Lemay ’21 gave the Penguins consistent shutdown minutes on the D. It truly was an all-around team effort as goalie Ben Speyer ’20 (26 saves), all 8 D and 11 forwards contributed to the victory. The coaching staff is very proud of the boys’ effort and attention to detail as well as not letting KUA hang around after a strong start.
The team will remain on home ice this coming Friday, Feb. 1st for a 5:30pm game against the Minuteman Flames before getting some rest over the long weekend.
Season Record: 7-4-2
