VBB vs. Northfield Mount Hermon School: CA 80; NMH 82

Northfield Mount Hermon School – 82
Cushing Academy - 80

The Cushing Varsity Boys’ Basketball team traveled to Northfield Mount Hermon School to take on the AAA powerhouse Hoggers in their home gym. The two teams have a rivaled past, and with much history between them, each side showed a competitive spirit from opening tip to final buzzer.

NMH started out strong with a show of their athleticism and size when they capitalized in transition and points in the paint to jump out to an early lead. However, Cushing stepped-up their drive and matched the physical play and intensity of NMH to fight their way back. Using numerous defensive stops and top notch offensive execution, Cushing had NMH questioning how match the aggressive play and talent of the Penguins. The first half ended with Cushing in the lead 33-31.

The teams came out of the locker room and battled on the court with the same intensity and back-and-forth action of the first half. Each team found their rhythm on the offensive end and the scoreboard was quickly lighting up. The majority of the second was a swing of only a few points in either direction until NMH was able to pull out to a six-point lead late in the game. The Penguins were undaunted and answered with a Malachi Ndur ’20 and-1 play and a Kyle Murphy ’19 three-pointer to tie the game. With 30-seconds left on the clock, NMH had offensive possession and looked to their 6’11” star player Max Larcos to convert an alley-oop dunk with 5-seconds in the game. Now down by two, Cushing rushed the ball to the other end of the court and had a good look at the hoop, but the ball rolled off the rim and out leaving Cushing to take home a heartbreaking loss in a well-played game for both teams.

Cushing Academy will have another opportunity to take on a AAA opponent this upcoming weekend when they travel to Rhode Island College on Saturday to take on New Hampton School at 6:15pm.
