VBB vs. New Hampton School: CA 85; NHS 79

Cushing Academy – 85
New Hampton School – 79
The Cushing Varsity Boys’ Basketball team traveled to Rhode Island College to take on New Hampton School, a AAA team loaded with talent, size, and experience. With Cushing coming off a heartbreaking loss to Northfield Mount Hermon School, they were primed and ready for redemption to grab a solid win against a AAA opponent.
New Hampton got off to a good start as they used their size to challenge the Penguins on the interior and deferred offensive penetration for the Penguins on the other end. As the moments ticked away in the first half, Cushing continued to battle for every inch of in space to get the ball inside and to get the New Hampton forwards into foul trouble. Despite the intensity and tough play by the Penguins, they were trailing the Huskies by four-points when the horn sounded to end the first half.
The second half started with New Hampton’s 6’10” and 6’9” forwards on the bench due to foul trouble, but they continued to fight valiantly to maintain their lead. With about 7-minutes remaining in the game, New Hampton was holding onto a 9-point lead due to from guard play and intense defense. The Penguins were desperately searching for some offense as they had struggled throughout the night to generate. The search landed on Andrew Kirkpatrick ’19 and his 4 steals and 4-three pointers to take over the remaining of the second half. The Cushing defensive execution of a full court press from Kirkpatrick, Bensley Joseph ’21, Kyle Murphy ’19, Malachi Ndur ’20, Daman Tate ’19, and Sean Conway ’19 stole the lead from New Hampton with 4-minutes left in the game. The Penguins never looked back once they grabbed the lead and the team took home an 85-79 victory.
The Penguins return home to the Watkins Field House on Wednesday, Feb. 6th at 3:30pm against Proctor Academy.
Season Record: 15-4
