JVGIH vs. St. Mark's School: CA 4; SMS 4

Cushing Academy – 4
St. Mark’s School – 4
It was a Wednesday 3:15pm puck drop vs. St. Mark's School this week for the Cushing JV Girls’ Puck squad.  The game was two high powered teams going head-to-head and the girls on both benches did not disappoint in their grit, dedication, and play!  Coming off a long weekend and a full week between games, Cushing came out strong and carried the play over the first few shifts with energy resulting in the first goal of the game by Lauren Cloherty.  Later in the period, St. Mark's would score two goals in under two minutes to take the lead going into the second period.
It was a hard fought, back and forth game with both teams exchanging point-blank chances.  On this day though, the goalies for both teams stood tall and turned away several high-quality scoring chances.  Late in the second period though, Cushing would sneak one past the St. Mark’s goalie and tie things up.  The tying goal came at the end of a long and grinding shift, and tireless work in and around the net by Katie Peck, when Nicole Lee tucked one away.
In the third, St. Mark's came out flying and seemed to put Cushing back on their heels.  They again scored back to back goals within minutes of each other and this time it seemed they may have put the game out of reach.  Cushing looked tired and on the brink of being shut-down, but it all changed with an end to end rush by Cloherty when she gathered the puck in the left faceoff circle and beat the goalie high blocker side to pull Cushing within 1.  Just minutes later, Abby Bradley took a turnover just inside her own blue line and rushed the puck up the ice.  After beating the defense to the outside, she fired a laser low stick side for the equalizer.
The rest of the third period was just as exciting as the previous periods with scoring opportunities at both ends.  But again, the goalies shut them down and the game would end in a thrilling 4-4 tie.
Next up for the girls is a Saturday, Feb. 9th match-up with Williston Northampton. The puck will drop at Williston at 1:30pm.
Player of the Game: Lauren Cloherty
