VBBIH vs. Northfield Mount Hermon School: CA 6; NMH 1
Cushing Academy – 6
Northfield Mount Hermon School – 1
The Cushing Varsity “B” Boys’ Hockey team came off the long weekend and a nine-day break from game action to explode for a 6-1 victory on the road over Northfield Mount Hermon School. There were times throughout the game when the Penguins showed the rust of the long layoff from game play, but they did not let it deter them from picking up a solid team victory.
The scoring for the Penguins was opened-up by Garrett Young ’19 when he sniped a breakaway shot past the Hoggers’ goalie. Young’s goal was set up by the beautiful passing of Shane McElhaney ’22 and Nick White ’19 allowing Cushing to head out to a lead they would never relinquish.
The second period was a trading of scoring chances between the Penguins and Hoggers. It would be the Penguins who would break through for the first goal of the second period when White gave the team a 2-1 lead on a powerplay goal. NMH was not going away that easily and would respond with a goal of their own to bring the score to 2-1 in favor of Cushing. The Penguins’ lead would be extended to 3-1 on a huge breakaway goal by Seamus Cummings ’22 and they would carry this lead into the second intermission.
It was during this second intermission when the emphasis was placed on those things being executed well by the Penguins and how they could take their game to a whole new level. The team responded to the challenge by the coaches and they came out of the locker room flying in the third period to slot three quick goals. Third period goals were netted by captain Josh Beese ’19, who had two goals, and third-line grinder John Lessard ’20 on a beautiful finish.
Between the pipes for the Penguins was Ben Speyer ’20, who once again had a solid outing. Speyer picked-up his 8th victory on the season when he shut the door on the Hoggers by stopping 24 shots, including two breakaways.
The coaches were pleased and proud of the team’s effort and are excited for a rematch with Phillips Exeter Academy this coming Wednesday, Fb. 13th at 4:00pm on Exeter’s campus.
