The Cushing Varsity Boys’ Hockey team hosted St. Mark’s School on Friday night. It was the final game of a five-game home stand and the first of back-to-back games on the weekend. Pat Aalto ‘20, in his first start between the pipes, earned the victory and six different goal scorers propelled the Penguins to a needed win as they head down the final stretch of the season.
Cushing came out flying when Nick Cafarelli ’20 scored 1:13 into the game. Just four minutes later defenseman Jackson Dorrington ’22 scored his first as a Penguin. Billy Norcross ’21 got in on the offensive action to make it a 3-0 lead just 10:41 into the game. St. Mark’s fought back with one of their own late in the period, but the Penguins answered just 17 seconds later with a Max Dorrington ’20 wrap-around goal to take a commanding 4-1 lead into the first intermission.
The two teams would trade power play goals in the second period to make it 5-2 in favor of Cushing. For the Penguins, it was Jake Hewitt ‘20 lighting the lamp to regain the three goal advantage heading to the third period. The Penguins successfully killed off a five-minute major penalty early in the third period. Late in the game the Lions managed to score to make it 5-3, but just 30 seconds later Jacob Banks ’20 sealed the deal with an empty netter making the final 6-3 Cushing. Banks, Hewitt, N. Cafarelli, and J. Dorrington, all ended the night with a goal and an assist. Shane Zarcone ’20 picked up two assists, while Bryce Montgomery ‘21, Brendan O’Donnell ‘20, Anthony Cafarelli ‘21, Jake Murphy ‘20, Brad Zona ‘19, and Lukas Gustafsson ‘21 each contributed with a lone helper. Aalto finished the night with 25 saves.
The Penguins travel to Canterbury School in New Milford, CT for the tail end of their two-game weekend. The face-off against the Saints is scheduled for 5:00pm.
