VBB vs. Wilbraham & Monson Academy: CA 61; WMA 52

Cushing Academy – 61
Wilbraham & Monson Academy - 52
On Wednesday evening, the Cushing Varsity Boys’ Basketball team ventured out to Wilbraham, MA to take on the Titans of Wilbraham & Monson Academy. The Titans feature an extremely talented team with a great balanced front court and back court presence. The sharp-shooting Wilbraham team had their sights set on upsetting Cushing to keep their own playoff dreams afloat heading into the final weeks of the season. Cushing had other plans on the evening and took a hard-fought road victory back home to Ashburnham.
Wilbraham won the opening tip and drained a quick three to get their bench and home crowd up on their feet and cheering loudly. Cushing answered with strong defensive efforts and silenced the Wilbraham fans with multiple defensive stops to slow the momentum of the Wilbraham early points. The star of the first half for the Penguins was Malachi Ndur ’20 as he converted three-pointers, lay-ups, and free-throws to provide balance on the offensive end for Cushing. Defensively, Cushing limited Wilbraham’s second chance opportunities and made the opposition hit their points from tough spots on the court. As the buzzer sounded at the half, Cushing carried a 31-21 lead into the locker room.
Both sides came out of the locker rooms looking to dominate and maintain the competitive edge over the other for the final stanza of the game. Each team played strong defense in the second half and this led to a tight battle between them. Wilbraham pulled the score within four on multiple occasions, but Cushing used strong defense, tough play, and sharp free-throw shooting to pull away in the end. Ndur scored himself 18 points on the evening while Sean Conway ’19 earned second highest scoring on the night with 15 points.
The team will return to action on their home court in the Watkins Field House this coming Saturday, Feb. 16th with a 3:30pm tip-off against the Big Red of Phillips Exeter Academy.
Season Record: 19-4
