VBB vs. Phillips Exeter Academy: CA 70; PEA 61

Cushing Academy – 70
Phillips Exeter Academy – 61
The Cushing Varsity Boys’ Basketball team welcomed Class A powerhouse Phillips Exeter Academy to Watkins Field House on Saturday afternoon in search of their 20th victory of the season.
To begin the game the Penguins marched out to a 12-0 lead, which has been a common theme in their recent games. This lead came from the hands of Bensley Joseph ’21, Malachi Ndur ’20, Sean Conway ’19, Daman Tate ’19, and Kyle Murphy ’19. Joseph, Tate, and Murphy showed their range and toughness with many points in transition and showing their range from three. The combination of the three combined for 30 in the first half and each drained two from behind the arc. As the game headed into the half it was the home team Penguins up 39-22.
Exeter utilized the break to make a few adjustments and these adjustments led to them getting hot in the second stanza. The visitors pulled the game down to single digits as they worked towards recovering. But it was the Penguins who then dug in their heels to use their depth, energy, and stifling defense to hold Exeter at bay. The final score of 70-61 was in favor of the home team Penguins and it was the 20th victory on the season.
The team will remain home this coming Wednesday, Feb. 20th as they welcome league rival Worcester Academy to the Watkins Field House. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00pm.
Scoring for the Penguins:
Daman Tate – 17 points
Bensley Joseph – 15 points
Kyle Murphy – 10 points
Sean Conway – 6 points
