VBIH vs. Governor's Academy: CA 5; GA 2

Cushing Academy – 5
Governor’s Academy – 2
Cushing Wins 5-2 at Governor's - Earns Playoff Spot
Heading into their final regular season game on the road at Governor’s Academy, the Cushing Varsity Boys’ Hockey team were looking to continue their strong play and secure a position in the rankings to qualify for the post season.  Five different Penguins scored on the night, and the penalty kill was a perfect 7 for 7 as Cushing defeated Governor's Academy by a score of 5-2, putting a strangle hold on a playoff spot in the Martin/Earl (Large School) Tournament. This tournament features 8 of the top teams in the NEPSAC Large School Division.
The Penguins took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Nick Cafarelli ’20 and Brad Zona ‘19.  Joe Sharib ’19 (27 saves on 29 shots) was particularly sharp in the first period as he stopped multiple breakaways and point blank rebounds.  In the second period Jake Hewitt ’20 scored when he got in behind the defense and slid it around the goalie's outstretched pad to make it 3-0.  However, a late second period goal by Governor’s, and a Governor’s 4-on-4 goal midway through the third period, made it a one goal game with ten minutes to go.  Cushing withstood the push by Governor's and got some needed breathing room when Cody Sealey ’21 snuck in from his position on the point to put home a rebound.  Pat Borella ’19 added insurance with an empty netter, making it a 5-2 final.  N. Cafarelli ended the night with four points on one goal and three helpers, while Borella and Zona each had a goal and two assists.
With the victory, the Penguins maintain the #7 spot in the large school rankings and will travel to #2 Phillips Exeter Academy for a first-round quarter-final single elimination match up on Wednesday, Feb. 25th.  Stay tuned for information regarding game details and fan buses.
