The Cushing Varsity Boys’ Basketball team welcomed the Phillips Academy Andover squad to the Watkins Field House for a Friday evening tilt.
Cushing used an early start to jet out to a double-digit lead. Contributions from the first rotation of players off the bench helped provide the spark needed. Alexis Matos-Reyes ’21 dropped 14 points in the bucket while Andrew Kirkpatrick ’19 tossed in 8 of his own all in the first half. The Penguins were holding tight to a ten-point lead, 37-27, at the halftime break.
The second half was more of the same as the team utilized strong defense to limit Andover’s easy baskets and second chance opportunities. Foul trouble for Andover helped to push the Penguins forward and they didn’t let up as they remained in attack mode through the thick of it. The Penguins walked off their home court with a 73-60 win.
The team will hit the road tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 9th and head over to Lawrence Academy. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00pm.
