The Cushing Varsity Volleyball team headed west to Easthampton, Massachusetts to take on the Wildcats of Williston Northampton School on Wednesday afternoon.
In a 3-set sweep by the Penguins, it was a battle for every point with big hits and heavy digs on each side of the court. The first two sets were dominated by Cushing when the Penguins took control by shutting down the Wildcats hitting game with stellar blocks by Kate Montigny ‘20 and Aicha N’Dour ‘20. With their backs against the wall, the Wildcats came out in the third set ready for a battle and pushed ahead quickly. With the Penguins down 8-0 to start the set, they started what would be a comeback for the ages. They fought hard to get back into the game and it was 15-22 with the Wildcats at the serve. After a big rally win, Erin Montigny ‘21 came up with huge serves to bring the Penguins back into the game. With the taste of victory within their reach, Cushing completed the comeback with great serves, hard hits, soft sets, and deep digs and took the match in straight sets.
There were key plays by multiple players on the court and it took a team effort each and every set. Another monster game from K. Montigny with 18 kills, 5 blocks, and 4 digs. Julia Cole ‘21 continues to share the ball with her 21 assists on the day accompanied by a kill and 5 digs. Playing hard at the net was N’Dour with 4 kills and 4 huge blocks, while Ann Nguyen ‘22 showed some back row prowess with 4 kills, 2 assists, 6 aces, and 2 digs. Alisha Sahi ‘20 chipped in 2 aces and 5 digs, while E. Montigny added 2 kills and 7 aces to the stat sheet.
Next up for the Penguins will be a Family Weekend match-up against a perennially strong Wilbraham & Monson Academy squad. The Penguins will meet up with the Titans this Saturday, October 19th in the friendly confines of the Watkins Field House. First serve is over the net at 3:15pm.
