VFH vs. Northfield Mount Hermon School: CA-5; NMH-1

Cushing Academy - 5
Northfield Mount Hermon School - 1
The Cushing Varsity Field Hockey Penguins took the ride over to Northfield, Massachusetts to take on the Hoggers of Northfield Mount Hermon School in a Wednesday afternoon match-up.  It was a beautiful fall afternoon and the stormy weather held off until after the afternoon to give the players a dry and calm game day.
The Penguins came out hot and before Coach Fralick could even get the Instagram feed fired up on her phone, her team had marched down the field and scored 16 seconds into the game.  It would be Rylie Jones ‘23 with what would turn out to be one of her four goals on the afternoon! However, Jones wouldn’t get the other three until after the Hoggers answered the first Penguins’ goal with a nice corner to tie it up 1-1.  As in previous games, the opponent’s goal seemed to be the motivation Cushing needed to step on the gas pedal and step on it they did. Maddy Biondi ‘20 ripped a slapper on a cross ball that tipped off the goalie’s pad before Jones tapped it behind the Hogger’s goalie for her second of four goals on the day.  It didn’t take long before Jones knocked in #3, and while no one threw any hats on the field in celebration of the hat trick, NMH was forced to call a timeout. For the next twenty minutes, the game stayed between the circles, but Cushing persevered and continued to push until Jones netted her fourth on the day to pull the Penguins further ahead at 4-1. Katie Dolan ‘22 executed a beautiful corner and ripped a shot to get the team to its final 5-1 score.
Tremendous work in the center of the field by Dolan, Lexi Browell ‘21, Paige Wodarski ‘21, and Sarah Potter ‘20 to manage NMH all game long. Allie Asadoorian ‘23 had beautiful game in net, breaking up two fast breaks and coming up with several other key saves. A beautiful team effort puts Cushing at 8-2-1 headed into their Family Weekend match-up against St. Paul’s School.  The game is scheduled for 3:00pm on Saturday, October 9th on Quimby Field in front of family and friends visiting from all over the world.
Season Record to Date: 8-2-1
