JVGS vs. Vermont Academy: CA-1; VA-5

Vermont Academy - 5
Cushing Academy - 1

The Cushing JV Girls’ Soccer Penguins hosted the Vermont Academy Soccer Wildcats on Quimby Field Wednesday afternoon.  The team enjoyed being the premier game on campus and were thrilled to be able to get a game on the larger turf field.

The first half of the game was the best soccer the girls have played this season as they were distributing the ball up the width of the field, keeping a tight defensive gap, and running down Vermont’s offensive threats. The Penguins broke through first to take an early lead when Ariela Sandler ‘22 scored a beauty off an offensive rush.  Ana Vilela ‘21 was the Cushing netminder on the day and she made several point-blank saves off Wildcat breakaways. Vermont got themselves on the board to tie it at 1-1 prior to the halftime break when the Penguins were caught watching in the defensive zone.

The second half was tough for the Penguins as the Wildcats went ahead and never looked back.  The Cushing defensive line held back and wasn’t as aggressive as they were in the first half and this allowed Vermont’s best ball handlers the time and space they needed to attack the Penguin net.  Despite the final score, this was an impressive “break-out” game for multiple Penguin players as they made the jump to the next level of impact. Jessie Feng ‘23 ran down countless Wildcat rushes to clear the ball aggressively from her outside back position.  Maggie Chen ‘23 was integral to creating offensive momentum and thwarting defensive threats in her outside midfield position. Angela Ye ‘22 was seen checking to the ball and boxing out her opponents to advance the ball to the corners as a Penguin striker. Corneilia Davis ‘22 was the “engine” on the field by running through the play and constantly changing momentum back into the Cushing favor.

The Penguins will be right back at the game action tomorrow, Thursday, October 17th when they travel to Applewild School for a 4:15pm kick-off.
