JVGS vs. Applewild School: CA-1; AS-1

Cushing Academy - 1
Applewild School - 1

It was a quick rest period for the Cushing JV Girls’ Soccer team as the Penguins were back on the game pitch within 24 hours of a tough loss against Vermont Academy.  This time the Penguins were on the road to Fitchburg, Massachusetts for a game against the Applewild School Varsity Girls’ Soccer team. It was Applewild’s Breast Cancer Awareness Day and the Penguins were fully involved as they wore pink ribbons and headbands to help raise awareness.  In addition to the solidarity shown by the Penguins in wearing pink, team captains Hannah Stoever ‘20 and Maria Vicuna ‘20 assisted in collecting donations to present to Applewild upon the team’s arrival.

As the game started, the Penguins were looking disorganized and Applewild took advantage of this disorganization to score an early goal.  Over the course of the game, Cushing got into the swing of things on the field to show more organization and get back to the team they were in the first half of the Vermont Academy game.  The score was evened up by Naka Kondo ‘21 when she snuck the ball behind the Applewild goalkeeper after a scramble in front of the net. Vicuna shined as an outside back by keeping a tight defensive gap and working to advance the ball up the line.

It was a challenging day for the Penguins to get in the swing of the game having played the day before as well as playing in a rare Thursday afternoon game.  But the positive to take away from the game was the Penguins ended it stronger than they started it and they look to build on that strength this weekend. The girls will return to the game pitch on Saturday, October 19th for a 3:00pm game on Martin Field against St. Paul’s School.  The team is looking forward to welcoming their families and friends to campus for Family Weekend as they look to show them the skills they’ve acquired since the beginning of September.
